What are you doing right now?  You're reading this Spanish lesson, of course.  In this lesson you'll learn how to make the -ing form of verbs, in Spanish.  You 'll also learn the official name of the -ing form: the present participle.

Steps:
1. Take off the verb ending (-ar, -er, -ir)
2. Add an ending:
  •  -ar verbs: add -ando
  •  -er and -ir verbs: add -iendo

Examples:
hablar (talk) - ar =   habl + ando =   hablando (talking)
comer (eat) - er =  com + iendo =  comiendo (eating)
vivir (live) - ir =  viv + iendo =  viviendo (living)

Stem-changing:
Some verbs stem change in the present participle:
  • only -ir verbs, and only the -ir verbs that stem change in the present tense
  • in the present participle, they'll only stem change by 1 vowel:  e-i or o-u

Here are some common stem-changing verbs:
 dormir

sleep

 durmiendo

sleeping
 morir

die

 muriendo

dying
 vestir

dress

 vistiendo

dressing
 decir

say

 diciendo

 pedir
 ask for

 pidiendo
 asking for
 sonreír

smile

 sonriendo

smiling
 seguir

follow

 siguiendo

following

Changing i to y:
If when you make the present participle, you end up with 3 vowels in a row, you'll need to make a spelling change. That's because of a Spanish grammar rule:

Rule: only 2 vowels in a row (silent u can be a 3rd)

In these verbs, you'll change the letter i to y. Why? Y and i make the same sound, but y isn't a vowel.
Here are some of these verbs:
 oír

hear

 oyendo

hearing
 leer
 read

 leyendo
 reading
 construir
 build

 construyendo
 building
 caer
 fall

 cayendo
 falling
 traer
 bring
 trayendo
 bringing
