Verbs are action words.  To run, jump, play, or to read, sleep, or eat.  If you're doing something, what you're doing is called a verb.

Let's look at three common actions: hablar, comer y vivir.

In Spanish, infinitive verbs end in -ar-er, or -ir.

Examples

hablar
to talk

comer
to eat

vivir
to live

To use a verb with a subject, you conjugate it.  You take off the -ar, -er, or -ir ending, and add a different ending.

For example, to say I talk, I eat or I live, take off the -ar, -er, or -ir and add -o.

hablo
I talk

como
I eat

vivo
I live

To say we talk, we eat, or we live, take off the -ar, -er, or -ir and add -amos, -emos or -imos.

hablamos
we talk

comemos
we eat

vivimos
we live

To say they talk, they eat, or they live, take off the -ar, -er, or -ir and add -an or -en.

hablan
they talk

comen
they eat

viven
they live
